Your missing the fact I was wrong:)... if you have a 2 inch diameter pipe and rip it lengthwise you would be in essence cutting off the top of pipe. Got messed up thinking, good catch.
Couple years ago I got some vinyl base board and put in the gutter along with wooden doweling to keep the baseboard in place. Worked great first couple of months. Worked like a gutter extension over the side. And very little water ran down the side, if any. But later on it turned that was also bad idea. What I wasn't expecting was the vinyl to slowly sagg over and down. After it sagged over then it no longer provided any useful purpose.
