Hanging shelves and other attachments to the interior walls

Question

I am likely over thinking this, but might as well just ask the questions...

I've noticed that there is a better way to configure the bathroom in our TT, given that the toilet paper holder is at exactly knee height and I tend to jam my knee into it when I step into the shower. It is only a matter of time before I mistakenly rip it off the wall.

So, is there any reason for me not to relocate it to the wall beside the toilet instead of across from it? And will a standard studfinder do the trick, or is there something I am not considering here?

While I am moving the TP roll, I might as well put in an overhead shelf too. Right now there is a ton of wasted space and never enough places to put the shower stuff etc.

A stud finder will work, most of the "studs" are 2'x 2' and normally are located only on the corners and not normally in the middle of walls unless they are more than two feet, so you might need to mount the unit with a backing of wood because the walls are very thin plywood with a veneer and hollow, you might be able to pry one of the pannels and slip a piece of wood as back up.

I removed my TP wall holder totally &amp; instead went with a sit-on-the-floor one that holds 4 rolls in a stack. If you have Ross stores, they usually have a good selection. For shelves I used one of those behind-the-toilet racks but only put on the top two shelves.

I put a shelf in our bathroom over the toilet as a decorative place for folded towels. When I drilled the holes, I used one of those things that goes over the drill bit to limit the depth it will go. (cant recall the name of the thing at the moment)You can add tape over the bit as well. Set the depth at about 1/4 inch. This way, if there are wires, you will not harm them. Then use wall anchors to attach your shelf.
