Has anyone replaced the slide-out furniture for a 12' sofa?

As described many times, the sofa-sleeper couch is not very comfortable and we find that the dinette area is rarely used. I started thinking of replacing them both with 2 of these Sofas on top of a storage box for everything. They would consume the entire slide-out area and we can use TV trays for the times we eat inside.

Has anyone done this before and how did it work? Or, is there another solution which might be better like a DIY frame with custom-made cushions or another solution?

Thanks,

Mike

  • I took the jack-knife and the dinette out and replaced with house style sofa with end tables.

I made a table that goes between drivers and passenger seat.

    Couldn't be happier!

PS: The wife sold old stuff on craigslist.

I disassembled mine inside. It wasn't going anywhere but the dump.

  • I don't see any reason why it would not work. Our's came with stand alone furniture. We took out the table and chairs and moved the couch to the other slide out and removed 2 rocker chairs and install a normal house hold style reclining couch. The weight of the couch is probably equal or less than the original couch with kitchen table and 4 chairs, or the 2 rockers and table and chairs. So no problem with the weights.

I don't think there would be that much difference in the weight on the slide, even using the area under the new sofa's for storage (unless you are planning on starting a rock collection (like Lucy in the Long-Long-Trailer).... then you might have a problem with weight.

Keep us posted on your modification. Looks like a great project. And yes .... we don't miss the kitchen table at all. We use small individual tables too.
  • Watch your weight in the storage boxes. Could be a problem in the slide out. To much weight is hard on moters and slides.
  • Are you keeping this RV forever or do you have plans to sell it anytime soon? No plans mostly because it works so well.

If they fit, go for it! Usually I'd agree but thats got me in trouble sometimes when younger.

Where do you eat? occasionally at the dinette but if not outside, we use TV trays from the sofa so we can watch TV better

    Thanks everyone
