prof, except for the weight capacity, that pneumatic caster looks good.

I'll probably go with the wheel you've already found. I probably need to put 500 pounds on it to keep my front end happy.

Just gotta be careful when the ground is soft.

Airstreamer, a pneumatic tire would be perfect -- is there a "swivel caster" mount for such a tire, with a thousand pound capacity?? Small aircraft have them, so they must exist -- probably pretty expensive. I wonder if there is a "small airplane junkyard" where you could get one?

I plan to make one of these for this purpose:

I have a front hitch on my F250. It is very useful for several things, including hitching the trailer to when I have to push it into a very tight or otherwise difficult spot that makes it impossible to back into.

Since my front hitch is rated only for 500 pounds, and my trailer's hitch weight is almost 1000 pounds, I use the trailer's jack post and wheel to take some of the excessive load from my truck and hitch. A larger wheel would be a welcome enhancement in this process. A larger wheel would roll much easier for manuevering and make it less likely I'll damage the jack post on rough ground, which is always a fear I have.

I am even considering the use of a small pneumatic tire on the post.

It's easy to remove the wheel! For example, let's say you bring some blocks of wood (which I always do, in case I have to fill in a deep rut in a dirt road). You pile up the blocks under the tongue, lower the tongue till the frame rests on the blocks and the wheel comes off the ground, take off the wheel, install the foot, and crank the foot down so that the tongue lifts off the blocks.

The whole thing takes five minutes, maybe less.

p.s.: I like your idea. It's a problem I've been trying to solve, too. In fact, it might fit my criteria if I could remove the wheel when I need to use just the foot. (Of course, essential items, like a spare tire, don't, necessarily, have to fit the rule.)

Len -- must everything have "at least one other use?" Well, maybe I could use my new big heavy wheel to crack walnuts? Iron my socks? Training wheel for a unicycle?

You might want to think about the Hitch Helper. It allows you to move the tongue left or right about 6 inches either way. Safer than using a wheel which could let the trailer move when you don't want it to.

"Weight and Cube". If it doesn't have at least one other use, it stays home. ;) We have a BAL leveler that stays home. It's too heavy and takes up too much space.

Barney, yes, I do move the trailer by hand -- on a level campsite, I sometimes move the trailer as much as ninety degrees to take advantage of a better view or a breeze or to improve privacy (in campground).
