I know what you mean about getting heavier every year. I've been known to pull the pin in the truck receiver and leave the WD hitch attached to the trailer's coupler complete with the WD bars attached but not tightened.
I'm not good enough to reconnect this way, but at least everything is right there.
Yeah, I know the bad guys would love my shortcut, but I do keep a padlock on the coupler and lower it as low as it will go. I've never done this for long term storage.
