Hitch Holder

I'm sure this is an old mod that I just came across today on another forum. What the guy did was take a bumper mount bolt on receiver and put it on the tongue next to the battery so he had a place to store the hitch when not in use. I would like to do something similar. I have a weld on receiver extension and I would like to weld it to the bottom of one side of the tongue, below the batteries, so I can do the same. Is there any problem with 2" of weld on either side of the receiver on the tongue. I certainly don't want to make a weak spot on the tongue by welding.
Thanks,
RichH

This is more for storage when it is in the lot. With this set up I will be able to use the same locking pin as I use on my truck. Plus it looks kind of cool and keeps the hitch out of the way to protect shins. Besides, why do something simple when Rube Goldberg has such great ideas. I really didn't think welding on the tongue was detrimental since the hitch, battery tray and propane mounts are all welded there. I do appreciate your input.

It will probably make the tongue stronger/more rigid. I welded angle iron onto my tongue and didn't give it a second's thought.
  • I just bolted my receiver onto my frame up front. I use a locking pin to keep it secure to the receiver. I have thought about putting some spot welds on the bolts to make it more secure, but if someone were to unbolt it, they would have to figure out how to remove the locking part between the receiver and the hitch. I am sure it could be done with enough time and effort, but that is a whole lot of work to get my hitch from the storage lot. My feeling is they can steal a lot of other stuff in the lot much easier. The equal-i-zer brand hitch is really heavy. I got tired of moving it around.

  • Understand. Stuck in a garbage bag takes care of my grease situation. I also have left mine connected to the receiver on the truck and just stow the bars.

It's an interesting idea, don't get me wrong. I just never thought of the need to do it.

I just store mine in the storage compartment.

I did that as well for some time and found it awkward and it left some grease in the compartment and on me. This idea keeps the hitch outside where it belongs.

  • The other advantage I expect to reap will be that the hitch will be stored under the tongue since that is where I will weld the receiver. Should keep it out of the way of the battery and propane tanks.

  • Here is mine, its just bolted to the angle iron the battery sits on.

  • Short welds would be fine, but why not just put the ball into the hitch already on the camper?
A padlock and you're safe and secure.
