Home made fiberglass roof

So, I have 5 class C motorhomes. All originally with rubber roofs. I used truck bed liner on one, worked pretty good. I was thinking about buying another units and I started seeing a few with fiberglass roof. So I thought, Why couldn't I just lay-up fiberglass over the rubber of the roof of one of the motorhomes? Epoxy resing, 3 to 4 layers of fiber, UV resistent top layer. Any thoughts about it?

  • Look in the internet for a method used on wooden boats that are covered with fiberglass, it is the "West" method and fiberglass epoxy sticks to wood ergo fiberglass matt also sticks to the wood with the epoxy.

    yep, remove the epdm.

  • Probably cheaper and less labor to just put a new rubber roof on and have another 15yrs at which point the trailer is going to be pushing 30-40yrs old and it's largely irrelevant.

As others have said, it's usually not the rubber itself that fails but the seams. Unless you eliminate the items going thru the roof, it's likely not significantly better.

One issue I can see is if you are sloppy, you could wind up with a lot of weight up high.
  • If you want to glass the roof, remove the rubber. If you think about it, it isn't the EPDM that fails but the sealants used to seal all the through holes and the screw holes that hold trim edges.

I have an aluminum roof and in some ways it's superior to all the others. Once it's coated to prevent corrosion, there is little to wear out. It still has the same leak potential spots but I've found Eternabond tape deals with that beautifully.

Fiberglass and epoxy will not stick to rubber..wooden roof maybe

Why not use one of those liquid epdm coatings?

Please, keep us updated on your project. I think it's a good idea. Maybe someone knows why it is not doable.
