Hot dog fork holder/carrier

I made this simple little doodad awhile ago, but finally got around to telling the world.

The "hot dog forks" here are the long-handled, two-pronged roasters for cooking hot dogs or s'mores or whatever over a campfire. My forks have a single extension, and are about 20" or so collapsed. They're typical of the ones that you might find in the random seasonal junk section of your favorite grocery store, which is incidentally where I found mine.

Carrying them around is a bit of a hassle because they're a bit long and skinny, limiting where they can be put, and they have rather sharp pointy ends that catch on stuff, and sometimes get kind of cruddy with junk from the marshmallows.

This is just a length of 2" PVC pipe with a cap on one end and a threaded cleanout on the other end. I put a 1/8" hole in the middle of the pipe cap to ensure ventilation so the cap wouldn't get stuck on with a vacuum or something similar. It may be unnecessary.

Four roasting forks fit neatly in the carrier. Six would probably fit if half were put in backwards.

  • Great idea.

We stick the sharp tips of the forks into a block of foam.

It also keeps the handles together.
  • Might try a long piece of Velcro. Easy in and easy out. Just a thought.
  • I don't have it mounted in the storage compartment—just tossed in with the tripod chairs. I see no reason why plumber's tape wouldn't work just fine to mount something like this, though. It might be a bit cumbersome to unscrew the opening in some cases.

I suppose wooden sticks might work better for marshmallows in particular, and they're certainly more traditional, particularly if you go off and cut down a little sapling yourself and sharpen the end to a point with your boy scout knife. (Of course, that's not an option in most campgrounds or state parks.) However, in as much as I really don't care for either hot dogs or marshmallows myself, I have a hard time getting too excited over culinary comparisons there. DrewE's preferred s'more contains chocolate and graham cracker only, and bonus points are awarded for good dark chocolate.
  • Tried "hot dog" forks once, found they were a real let down.. Real pain to clean and didn't work worth a darn with marshmallows (heat followed the steel into the center of the marshmallow and they would spin or fall off before being done).

Changed to bamboo skewers.. Like THESE 12" long ones.. Much better!

Hot dogs cook fine and even marshmallows come out perfect.. And even better yet, no cleaning or storage issues.

For a hotter fire I prefer to use Maple branches cut longer over any metal utensils..
  • Curious if you have mounted it in your storage area. I purchased some material 3 months ago and now want to mount it to the upper part of my storage area and am thinking of using plumbers strapping to do it.
  • Ahhh...simple but effective. Going to be next on my winter project list
