I did basically the same thing, except I found some whiteboard contact paper stuff that I put on the existing panels. Same idea and same basic outcome. It is a very useful and easy modification.
I did have to put a border of tape (I used fancy patterned duck tape) around the white board because the roll of contact paper stuff was about a quarter inch narrower than my fridge panel.
