Get a PURE SINE inverter since you should get a new one anyway.
Most inverters of all types have a high voltage and low voltage cut off alarm/ feature. Over voltage should not have caused any damage that fast as it should have turned itself off.
If the converter was back feeding it, i believe at worst you would just drain your batteries very rapidly.
Is it possible that there was already 120v available and it was fed into the inverter? ((some people hard wire the inverters to apply power to the entire camper, if you plug the camper it, a back feed condition can happen and blow the inverter))
I have a -cheaper- PS Morningstar PS 2k inverter, with the amazon 3 year warranty, and its running flawlessly even under constant (1 week) 24/7 use.
The fans are loud, but its in a compartment under the camper so we dont hear them at all.
