Keeping cabinets and drawers locked while traveling

Hello All.....New to the forum so bear with me:
My wife and I purchased new a 2008 35' Durango Lx, we've enjoyed it very much and have traveled through many states pulling it. However, the first needed modification was to add drawers to the pantry. I know of no human that can reach all the way to the back of these deep and narrow pantry shelves to retrieve an item from the back, especially if there are items in the way. I fabricated drawers for each of the shelves to solve that problem. However, on the first trip afterwards, one of the drawers must have forced the door open and fell out onto the floor. Incidentally, I had installed magnetic catches at the bottom of each drawer but found out that wasn't strong enough to hold the drawer in place. I went to the store Babies R Us to find the perfect solution. A very powerful magnetic latch for cabinet doors and drawers that works like a charm. There are two positions, "locked" and "unlocked". Unlocked for everyday use and locked for traveling. After installation they are invisible and when placed in the lock position, the cabinets and drawers cannot be unlocked and opened without using the included "magnetic key". Once you get to your destination, use the "magnetic key" to unlock the cabinets and drawers one at a time and once opened, push the little button to "unlock" and use the cabinets and drawers normally. Even though I've added or modified several "things" to our 5th wheel, by far, this is definitely the most cosmetically appealing and positive functioning modification.

You should be able to view photos here....or let me know if I did this incorrectly, thanks.

I am interested on how you made your shelves. I agree that the shelves are much too deep and high for what we would store in the pantry. Everything we look at in the stores are too wide or too narrow and would loose valuable space. Any chance on seeing a picture of what you made? I am looking for any suggestions to help me.
    Thanks

You asked how I made my shelves. The shelves were already there. Did you mean the drawers instead? I had posted photos on Photobucket, but just recently found out that there is an easier way to post pictures, thanks to the Technology Moderator. This will be the first time that I try it, so here goes.

Do you have to use the magnetic key each time you open a drawer . Or is it possible to unlock while camping and then relock before travel.

You press a button on the catch for locked. Close the door or drawer and it cannot be opened without using the magnetic key. Once the door or drawer is opened, press the same button in the opposite direction and use the door or drawer as you would any other without a lock installed. The magnetic key is no longer needed until it is locked again.

  • I have pondered this exact change for my pantry. It looks nearly identical in size. How do you keep the drawers from moving and bouncing off the back of the door while under way?
