LED Porch Lighting

Our new Winnebago has the usual 'porch light' that puts out a dismally weak glow. We enjoy sitting outside in the evening but sitting in the dark isn't much fun. Looking on eBay I found 15' rolls of warm white 12 volt led lights that have an adhesive backing for $10. These rolls can be cut to length to fit your application. I found they fit perfectly on the bottom edge of the Winnnebago's rain gutter. After cleaning the bottom of the gutter, I stuck it on, then applied a bead of clear silicone sealer/adhesive to each edge to help insure it doesn't come loose. These lights use very little current so I used wire intended for home alarm sensors. It was small enough to fit in the lower groove intended for slide-out awning fabric that wasn't being used in the porch area. I cut some strips of Velcro felt, folded them, and inserted them in the groove to hold the wire in place. I picked up a 12 volt feed at the existing porch light. Quite inexpensive and looks really great at night when lit! Puts out just the right amount of light! If you look close at the top picture, you can see the short piece of wire running up from the original porch light to the groove where it runs forward to the end of the light strip where the wiring is!

  • Nice work, I'm a huge fan of those lights too. A couple of things I've found useful with them:

The adhesive back is always pretty useless, and its a pain to spread silicone, so I use this double sided tape which is the perfect size.

And these dimmers work really well with these lights.

I use those as the only switch (dim all the way to turn it off), I haven't measured to see if there's a micro amount of power used in their wait state but no biggie if you have solar. Another nice thing about that dimmer is you can open the box and build the dial into other things since its just a single pot on the end of a length of wire leading to the tiny circuit board.
  • I love those light strips for RV use, especially if you look at the prices for some others. I have used two+ strips for some interior, indirect lighting applications. What we especially like are the ones that we put on the top edge of the slides for indirect, Off the ceiling light. I did try some of the colored strips on the outside, but did not have good luck with those. May try again with a different style of strips.
