mbrule,
There are numerous ways of accomplishing what you desire. I took the easy but, expensive way out. My son bought me a "starter kit" marketed by Dometic. It consists of one, 39" LED self sticking strip, a 110VAC converter, a direct 12V power control and, a remote control. When I finally got around to install it, in the same area you're thinking of, I decided to splurge and, since he worked at an RV service center at the time, I had him pick up three more "add-on" 39" strips. When all said and done, I have close to 140" of LEDs, just under the rolled up awning.
Now, when the awning is in all the way, that strip will put out very nice light, approximately 4-5' out from the side of the coach. But, if I open that awning only a foot or so, that LED strip will throw out light, as much as 35-45 feet away. And, the good part, I can sit there with the DW relaxing and, with a push of a button, can dim it way down to a very low mood light. So, I can read a book at midnight (better be alone camping though, that's fairly bright light) or, I can mood it down to just relax.
The Dometic starter kit is around $75.00 if I'm not mistaken and, each additional strip was around $22.00 each. Yep, a bit on the high side but, as stated, very versatile lights with lots of variation.
