Looking for inexpensive upgrade for bunk mattresses....

If you have some time to wait, check online places like amazon.com, buy.com, overstock.com etc. I bought an 8" thick memory foam queen size mattress to replace our crappy uncomfortable mattress in the RV. If memory serves I spent about $300. It is super comfortable, vastly superior to the bottom of the line mattress the manufacturer supplied.

I had to "notch" it out to fit around a cabinet in the bedroom. Since it is foam, no springs or anything, I was able to cut it to fit without any issues at all.

My answer pertains to replacing the top mattress. It is an odd size twin and I had trouble finding something. I ended up getting something from Walmart (site to store pick up) that was "suitable". More than I wanted to pay; it was some sort of dense woven poly thing. I am sleeping on it at 140 lbs. and have for two years. Will it last forever...nope. I may have even cut it to fit...don't remember that part. I sleep on it for 3 -4 months per year; hubby is long so he needs the WHOLE lower corner bed. I added a memory foam on topper 3".

A long time ago I needed a foam pad for a bed I made. I bought a 5' x 6' 5" thick foam from a fabric shop. Check with some local upholster's. I'm sure there is a reasonable alternative.

I've ordered custom cut foam from foambymail.com for 3 bunk mattresses and 3 dinette seats now. For our bunk mattresses, we kept the original junk that was on them and put these below for a "mattress pad" feel.

My in-laws found it remarkably more comfortable and thanked me when we went away for 9 days in December together. :)

This has been our main source.

But recently, we passed the memory foam onto our GD to cut down for her bed. It was replaced via Amazon with a 2.5" Memory Gel Foam. It is a little firmer and not quite so hot because I chose one that's ventilated.

I also recommend trying to buy as big of one as you can with the hopes of cutting it and fitting both beds. Should be able to measure the two to determine if you are able to do that. Memory foam is very easy to cut with an electric carving knife. I recently cut a king down to fit an RV king with rounded corners, took longer to take the matteres out than it did to cut the memory foam. Good luck and happy camping!

I've bought 3" memory foam toppers at Sam's Club for $99. That was for Queen size. One went on our short queen bed (trimmed the bottom to fit) and one was trimmed into two bunks with some left over on the sides and bottom that was trimmed off also to custom fit.

All the trimmings got placed and arranged in my dogs zippered bed as extra padding and now we all sleep great!
