Magnet Mount Lights on Towed Car

Another vote for taillight wiring.

when we got our toad, I looked at the cost and the hassle of magnetic lights including, cost of the lights, hassle of taking them off, storing them, getting them out and putting them back on, possibility of them falling off, scuffing the paint etc.

then I looked at the taillight wiring. Yes there was an initial cost of installing them (as at the time I was too busy to do it myself) but then, all I have to do is plug in the cord when I hitch/unhitch and the lights are done.

No brainer for me.

Just use a piece of that Shaw Wow that You bought at the Flea Market! That's all
most Towing Companies use !

I have never even thought about this issue however, you query has triggered what may be a useful idea. I have in the past purchased cupboard and drawer liner (plastic or rubber mesh) for use in our MH and also in a boat we had. The stuff really impedes/stops the sliding of anything placed on it. I also use it on my granite counter tops to stop a cutting board from slipping. I have no idea what it is called however I think I bought it at an RV supply house. I would think that placing that stuff between the lamp and the car surface would protect the car surface and probably do some good as regards decreasing the probability of the lamp slipping. I would guess you could glue the material to the lamp base but removal and replace may be a bit of a problem. The material is quite porous and the glue used would likely get a real good bond. Also, the hardened glue may also damage the vehicle surface.

Mount the lights on a board and set them in the rear window.

Thank you all for your advice. I shall investigate a tailight wiring kit.
For those that did'nt know: In many states rear lights are required when the towed towed vehicle projects further than 2 feet from any rear lights. ie. the fender lights on the dolly. Thanks again

i never had problems with 2 napkins on the base, and a ziplock bag over everything,

mind u it was a cb mount, but it never moved, and never scratched anything

I wouldn't use them.
I dolly-towed a car across the country and no matter what I used, dust and dirt would collect between the surfaces and mark the paint.

purchased a brand new 2013 VW CC Sportline Coupe.

I think it's most 'definitely' time to break down and buy a wiring kit. :B

Paint jobs get expensive. Just buy the tail light kit for your vehicle. Probaly less than $100 & not worry about the paint.
