Modification Adding doors / French Doors to garage

We just bought a 2017 Grand Design Momentum M350. Since we have dogs our concern was to close off the garage with a full door(s). What was installed is a 3 season's plastic set up. Which does not offer any security. Doing some reading, and researching online. I've had no luck except seeing a Heart Land Cyclone with such doors.

My question: What is required to modify and use the current framing to a French Door?
  • If I'm understanding this: You wish to install a French door set on the backside of the garage in lieu of the typical plastic film doors?

I would definitely not install any glass door set on the rear of the garage. It will be formidable to attach the jambs into the trailer frame and will add a considerable amount of weight to the trailer, all of it on the rear. It may make the 5th untowable.

A better solution may be to modify the existing doors by replacing the film with Lexan or other hard surface plastics. A commercial door installer is the guy I would seek and there is one on this Forum. Bob's your Uncle is his handle.

The OP has a TOY HAULER.

TOY HAULERS are typically predesigned with a HEAVY hitch weight to ALLOW FOR HEAVY LOADS LIKE ATVs/MOTORCYCLES/GOLF CARTS to be loaded in the rear.

I highly doubt a few hundred pounds in French doors will bother the hitch weight.

What the OP wants to do while it may be possible to do, it won't be cheap and will severely limit the garage area usage due to the width of the French Door opening.. Good quality French doors for homes often START in the $2K range and go up..

As far as the OPs concern about "security", not sure if the concern was for the Dog getting out or someone breaking in but in reality nothing in a RV is "secure" from someone breaking in.. They want in, they WILL get in..

If concerned about the dog getting out, simply get some METAL FENCING to create a dog proof barrier. Setup the fencing on the inside of the garage plastic doors.. Much cheaper and does not require major modifications and can be setup/removed easily to allow the garage to be used for other purposes.

    On edit..

    Something like this..

which is 4ft high and 6 ft long for $52 a panel.

You would need two panels and cut them to fit the opening, put hinges on each side of the garage bay and latch in the center..

Panels could swing in when not needed..

    Now you're thinking!;)
  • if your thinking of installing a french door unit made for residential house use they are really not built to be bounced and vibrated down the road. the door frames are usually wood finger jointed then glued together and will not stand up to the road. although there are some plastic, vinyl and metal frames available by special order. if you are going to chance it i would look at fiberglass doors as they may hold up better.
  • why not a vinyl slider with tempered glass. I see sliders in them all the time.
