My LED Strip Install

After seeing many new trailers at the RV Show with LED strips mounted under their awnings, we decided that we should add one to ours. I then discovered the many threads here on RV.net regarding these strips, and was thankful for the information they contained.

After much research, I determined that I wanted a waterproof strip that had both warm-white LEDs and RGB color LEDs. I also wanted an RF controller instead of an IR controller, so that I wouldn't have to mount an IR receiver in a visible location. I decided on this kit from Amazon: RGB+WW LED Strip with RF Remote

After reading the many posts here, I also ordered some 3M Auto-Body Trim tape for better adhesion to the trailer.

The kit arrived, and I hooked it up to a 12V power supply to test it out:

It looks great, and the remote is awesome. It is a touch-panel remote, that is quality built, and has a range of about 100 feet from the receiver.

I needed much more cable than the few inches that was attached to the strip, so I ordered the RBG+W, 5-conductor cable from Amazon: 5_conductor LED Cable

I also ordered 10 feet of 1/2 inch white heat-shrink tubing from ebay to cover the LED cable:

I unsoldered the short wires, and attached the long cable directly to the strip:

Then I slid the heat shrink over the cable, and shrunk it using the stove burner. I then stuck the 3M Body Trim tape to the back of the strip, and trimmed off the extra width of the tape. After that, it was ready to attach to the trailer.
  • I'm on like day 3 of looking at these and still can't decide. haha That's just the way it always works for me. I have it all figured out as far as how to wire them in and getting them into the basement of the 5er. Now I'm stuck on the fact that I just know a year from now I'll turn them on and there will be a few LED's in the middle that aren't working and I'll have to rip them down and re-do them. haha You might call it being pessimistic but it's actually called experienced. :D
