LED strip lighting

Has anyone put the strip lighting with the sticky tape in their TC? Just looking at some utube videos and wondering how good they stick. I just read the article in TCM and Capri camper so it got me to thinking. I looked at some that had a remote control which seems ideal. We are not sure if they are worth dealing with though.

  • When mounting on the frame, I set them in a thin bead of clear lexel caulking. When they need replacement, a razor blade will take the whole thing off.
  • I replaced the tubes in my florescent lights. I used the clear 3M tape made for installing auto molding. Cleaned the fixture painted surface with alcohol. Probably 4 months now and they are still holding.

The led strips were the aluminum substraight type. Initially installed 5 strips but had to remove 2 as they were much brighter than I had anticipated.
  • Mine started peeling off after a couple of weeks, even though they were protected from the elements and didn't get wet. I bought some 3M automotive double sided tape and reinstalled them. No problems in the last year.
  • I installed few of them in my house and they stick well. Bought them on amazon.
I guess quality can vary from seller to seller.
FIY Home Depot is selling heavy duty, dual sided tape in red color. I used it on really heavy stuff and it works.
Don't try to stick tape to greasy area.
  • I have played with them quite a bit, several different types. Among other things, I removed the tubes from my 5er fixtures and installed strips. I found the best prices to be on ebay. When buying pears, look closely at them to insure they are compatable. Water proof parts are different from non waterproof, single color parts are different from color parts. As I recall, there are two different widths. Dimmers and/or remotes can be separate or part of the light strip. You can cut the strips to the length you want.

For the most part, the tape on the strips suck. Some work okay and others don't. Most hardware stores sell double back tape.
  • Lights, Kewl..

heheh, I luv'em... i see the Trucks, especially at Christmas time and wonder just how they are 'Hooked up'...

I've seen the strip lights, but as OP asks, just how are the stuck on without major work and my question is how are they "Powered".

Is everyone running lines to another light source or are you drilling into shell and hook up internally somewhere. I would think it's on it's own circuit to allow on/off switch or gradual..

Anyway, '...looking for answers in all the right places...'

    thanks..

    Lights are kewl.. heheh..

  • I installed a 20 ft strip of LED's under the awning track of my Class A and wired it in to the porch light fixture with an adapter that replaces the porch light bulb. It is affixed to the fiberglass sidewall and has stayed stuck on fine for a little over a year and several thousand miles of travel.
  • I have this in my camper. Despite good surface prep it did not stick well. I used a few carefully placed thumb tacks grabbing the side not puncturing the light. Very delicate. They have worked well for me three years now. 15 feet of blue into a toggle switch.
  • I put 2 x 6ft strips in my truck topper and loved it. Even better after I added a dimmer switch....
