Not just 'old school' (which are far better than cables) but the more aggressive V-Bar style chains. They have (thus the name) little steel bars bent into V's and then welded into the voids of the cross chains that you drive on. They work like the claws on an animals paws.
They will turn even 'highway' tires into something with some serious bite to them.
