Look for the bubbling during charging; they won't bubble just sitting there. If you aren't charging at crazy high voltages and currents it'll be more akin to a simmer than a rolling boil, so you don't need to use a full hazmat suit or anything. Eye protection is not a terrible idea, nor are gloves, though I admit I don't generally bother...probably I should.
