Regarding safety, the bubbles are a highly explosive mixture of hydrogen and oxygen.
To avoid sparking an explosion do not disconnect or move the battery terminal connections while charging. Cut power to the charger at least 4 feet away from the batteries and fan or blow away the air over the battery before disconnecting the terminals.
