I've used them and they work fine if you follow the directions and put the empty 1 pound bottle in the freezer for 10 or 15 minutes before hand. Keep in mind that you have to be capable of turning the 20 pounder upside down to fill the 1 pound canister which might be a problem for some.
As someone else pointed out, I usually just buy a few 1 pounders when I find them on sale but I use the refill option if I run out while dry camping. My own rule of thumb is to not try to refill a canister more than 3 times (I use a marker on the bottle to tally this) and I seldom try to fill more than about half way.
