One Pound Propane Re fill Adapter

Has anyone used the adapter to put on your 30 lbs tank to enable you to refill the 1 lb disposable tanks. I was looking into purchasing one to avoid lugging around the 20 lb tank for my BBQ.
  • Another option is to buy a smaller tank and adapter hose. I bought a 5 lb. tank to use with my Weber grill. The tanks aren't cheap, but it's much better then buying cylinders all the time, and one tank lasts a fair amount of camping trips. And if you have a propane dealer that charges by the gallon, it's easy just to get it filled when you think your down to the last gallon or so.

Thank you Kaydeejay. Great information. Much appreciated.
    You're welcome.
I know that was an Ontario bulletin but I suspect something similar applies in the other provinces as well.

While the chances of getting caught are slim, the process is illegal in Canada.
    Read this advisory.
In the US it is illegal to transport refilled containers across State lines (!).
As I say, chances of getting caught are slim unless there is a problem.

The reason it is illegal is because some people overfill the disposable tank, and they can rupture, leak gas into say a trunk of a car, then explode the car when the truck is opened and a spark is created by the key or lock.

So make sure that the tank is not to full.

Much better idea is to get a 1 gallon refillable LP gas tank. CampingWorld.com sells them, though they are much more expensive than the typical 30 pound cylinder, there are just not that many manufactured, so cost of scale is much more expensive than a tank that is produced by the hundreds every week.

I had a 1 gallon tank that I refilled every spring, and it would last much of the summer, running the BBQ and propane lantern. 1 gallon is about 95,000 Btu's of heat, or enough to run a 19,000 Btu BBQ about 5 hours.

  • How do you weigh the 1 lb tank as the connector is a hard connect to your 30 lb tank or do you use an extended propane line for this???
  • I have used for years. I made a reverse shraeder tool so I can bleed the cyl as I fill it. Use a scale so you don't over fill. I write the date on the tank and fill only 3 times then recycle.
  • Yes that is the exact one I was looking at. I have heard people speaking about them but no one that has actually used one. Seems like a good idea.

I keep looking at those refill thingys, but then when I see the 1 pound tanks on sale I just buy more of them.
  • Like This?
I've never used one. Personally, it doesn't seem safe but apparently it is done often.
