This is how I did mine
First I replaced the bolt on each of the arms with an eye bolt with a jam nut. Between the two eye bolts I used picture hanging wire connected to a snap connector and turnbuckle on each end. I tried rope/twine but it stretched too much.


After tightening the turnbuckle, not too tight, I'm able to hang the lights. I'm able to retract the awning without removing the lights.
