Not sure about your model but mine has a rocker switch in one corner of the vent. I set the fan speed one time by standing on a chair, then use a yard stick to hit the rocker switch. That will turn the fan on or off without affecting the vent itself.
If you check out a local big box hardware store, they may have a device that folks use for changing out chandelier or ceiling fan lights. That might work for changing the fan speed.
