My on-off-various speeds knob does pull off. I like the doo hickey idea. Ace hardware should have the answer.
What about one of those `extended hands' devices that wheel chair owners use to pick stuff up off the floor. Maybe it could grab the knob and still have enough space to turn it. I have a fuse possibly in the way.
Another idea is to drill two holes in the knob and reach up there with a two-prong steak fork.
Remember, when brain-storming no ideas is a bad idea...
