Replacing Anti Skid Step Tread

Has anyone replaced worn anti slip step tread? Not sure of the best way to remove the old.

Part of the original tread has peeled off but the rest is still attached. We purchased new tread but no directions on how to best remove the old.

  • Just an idea for the replacement... On my FIL's rig we stripped off the old stuff well, including paint thinner and some fine sanding to remove the old adhesive. I then taped off the area, and used part of a quart of truck bed liner goop to make the new tread. It has better surface area coverage than the old tape, and looks great after two years.
  • Thanks for the hair dryer suggestion. We didn't want to go at it with a putty knife and make the situation worse.
  • Pulled Off old stuff, slow process. Might have to use hair dryer to soften old adhesive. Cleaned that off the best I could. Used rubbing alcohol on remaining adhesive on step. Let dry good. Put new strip on, they were about 6" wide and maybe about 15" long. Held for a year, at least, before I traded it.
