SoundGuy,
I did the same mod to my stove vent this winter while in Florida. It is a very inexpensive way to make that noisy vent very usable and it was not hard to do. :)
I used this illustrated thread as a guide.

So ... this mod makes the vent fan quiet while it's running full blast?
No, it still makes a racket at full speed but now it is not necessary to run it full speed all the time. We found that very useful this past winter while snowbirding in Florida. In the past, we just used the Fantastic fan mounted in the ceiling if cooking something on the stove due to the noise of the vent fan. Now my wife uses the vent fan frequently on a slower speed instead of the big fan. Seems to work just as well as it did on the fast noisy speed. :)
That modification allows you to dial any speed you want between full and off. Seems to me it would be ideal for cold weather camping where you don't want to, or can't, run a big ceiling mounted high capacity fan.
