Replacing worn, cracked decals

Well here goes:
This thread will document my replacement of my worn and Cracked decals. My trailer is now 9 years old and the factory decals should have been replaced a couple of years ago.

They are in rough shape to say the least. So I did some research, and decided to take a whack at it. I bought a quart of crystaltek vinyl off, a heat gun, and a plastic putty knife. I used the vinyloff according to their directions, and it worked well. 2 hours later I had a white sided trailer. (That's 2 hours for 1 side)
I had researched replacement graphics and although our trailer has served us well, I didn't feel the need to advertise for Keystone any longer. Replacement graphics are EXPENSIVE.

So I had decieded to paint the graphics back on. I first cleaned the surface with simple green and water. Then I masked off where I wanted the new graphics, which just happened to be where the old graphics were, using the faded lines from the old graphics as guide as to where to mask. I used green frog masking tape, it left nice clean lines. I spent about 1 hour masking, and then did several coats of paint with rustolem paint. Total today about 4 hours prepping, masking, and painting for 1 side.
I am happy with the results so far.

I know I have a window to replace, it is on order and is another story all together

I have a local sign shop working on a custom vinyl decal for the front and back, and will post pictures of that once it is done.

All in all, I am satisfied with the way it is turning out, way better looking than before.

    Looks awesome!!

Mine are looking the same...all cracked and peeling.

So you just use a rattle-can application? I assume since it's such a small area, it would be just fine.

    Very nice!! Thanks for sharing!!

  • Yes I just used spray paint, I guess o should have been clearer on that. The key, I think, is several thin coats to prevent getting runs.
  • Does your trailer have gel coat? Just wondering in case I want to try some decal remover on our old 5th wheel without gel coat. So far nothing seems to hurt the fiberglass but I usually wash everything off, right away, if it is anything strong.
  • When I did mine, I am fortunate enough to have a vinyl cutter. I just ordered me a few different colors and created my own graphics. Most sign shops will cut some pretty cheap.
  • Well winter is over and I finally caught up on my spring projects around the house (yes it’s mid July) I was able to finish the graphics on the other side and happy with the results. The first side I did is holding up well with no noticeable fading. No chipping or cracking after 6 months. It always sits outside unprotected. If you have peeling cracked faded graphics I highly recommend at least looking into this. All in I probably do have 28-32 hours into it. I wish I would have kept track of my hours. Now to wait a week or two and wax it.
