My backer was steel (thin). I used a magnet to map out the size of the backer and made an oak board to match the size. Mounted the board to the backer with 9 screws then mounted the tv mount to the oak board. I was afraid 2 screws into the backer would not be stout enough. I used self drilling counter sunk sheet metal screws. Probably #6 size. Hope this helps........
