This is always a very broad question with equally broad answers, mostly all correct answers.
IMO, if the work is general, the thread type may not matter much.
But for more critical and important projects, I want a screw made for the intended job. There are subtle differences that do in fact make a difference under the right circumstances.
Over the years I have come to love SPAX and related brands using Torx/Star bits for every project. Some multipurpose versions are extremely versatile and well made and the drive type cannot be beat.
