People who work with wood for a living, use wood screws in wood, and metal screws in metal, hence the name.
You can also buy a tapered point drill bit for use with the wood screws, so the threads bite the entire length of the shaft.
And NO it's not, wood screws are not threaded the whole way to the head, unless you buy them that way.
