Nobody uses wood screws? I'm so old I still use them, I have boxes of them, slotted heads. Nobody sells the proper drill bit for wood screws anymore.
Drill a pilot hole, very good info. Pilot hole must be the right size for the screw. If you do not know how to measure the screw to find root diamater, Google pilot hole size for screws.
