Shower-to-Closet Mod?

Hi,
We are preparing for a long trip this summer with our small travel trailer (a Jayco 184bh). We don't intend to use the shower in the trailer and will be using the tub as a place to store dirty clothes.

I'd like to make a mod for hanging clothes in the shower. I bought a shower tension rod, thinking this would work, but it was too long and couldn't get firm support. I've thought about installing a dowel rod with rod holders, but I'm not sure this would be smart, even if we drill into a joist.

Has anyone else attempting to turn their shower into a closet? Any good mod tips or pictures to share?

    Two of our shower walls which are across from each other do not go to the ceiling so I cut notches in a dowel rod that was about the diameter of a broom handle and lay it across the top of the shower. The notches cut into the rod fit on the top of the shower walls and keep the rod in place. It is easy to lift in and out as the use of the shower changes.

    My Winnebago came with something like this installed. DW loves it.

    Our previous KZ Spree had a shower / tub so it was a perfect place to hang wet jackets, sweaters, etc, like this.


    Nice set up. Ours doesn't have the fiberglass tub/shower combo. The walls are basically the same as the walls throughout the trailer, with that wallpaper-style wall covering. I'm hesitant to use the shower on a regular basis because I don't think that material will hold up well.

    Thanks for the tip! I didn't realize that about the grey tank odors. We will be sure to run the water in there occasionally.

    We definitely don't plan to make the shower unusable since we plan to use it in the future and wouldn't want to hurt our resale.

    Possible reason that you couldn't get a firm support (for shower tension rod) is that walls are not firm. 1/4" plywood will flex under tension, and rod will drop. Try locating the studs and install it there.

    The same goes for permanent closet rod holders - try and install it onto studs. Those m.orons at the factory often drive screws where there is nothing but thin plywood, my shower head holder is attached this way, screws are pulling out already.

    How about using epoxy or a good adhesive like Liquid Nails and glue a closet rod holders to the walls of your shower...then you can cut a wooden closet dowel to size and drop it in...

    You might be able to build a freestanding frame to fit inside of the shower using Schedule 80 or 120 PVC pipe and fittings with a cross piece to use as a hanger bar. You may need to use weights to keep it from falling over depending on how many clothes you hang on it if there's no way to secure it in the shower.
