Slide topper replacement

One of the toppers on my trailer is about to go. Looked at a couple of u tube videos & it looks pretty easy. I'm sure one of you has done it before. Was it easy? Did you use OEM or aftermarket? Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks, Mike

  • Tough tops are well made tops I just install one today 11/2/13, didn't take long at all. The video on the site is great I use two people to install the new top.
  • I used Tough tops for my replacement. They have a great video on how to do it. The web site tells you how to measure and how to install. You definatly need at least two people for most toppers and three people would be helpful for larger toppers. here is the web site, take a look and make up your own mind if it is something you think you can do.

  • I had a local upholstery shop make new ones for me with herculite material. Much stronger and about half the price of others. We used the old ones for a pattern.
  • We need to do both of ours, bedroom and living room. Where did you find your aftermarket units? I've glanced at OEM prices and am having a touch of sticker shock!
  • Did all 3 of mine myself. Biggest challenge was figuring out which end the spring is on and immobilizing it before taking things loose. Here is my report:

While I was at it, while I had the toppers off I also replaced all the slide seals. One had already failed.

I had new toppers made at some place in AZ and shipped to me. Only thing I wished I had done was make them a little wider to make sure both ends extend beyond the edge of the slide - I'm getting some water running down the end of the slide and some leaked in.

I measured the ones I took off, but if you can make them a bit wider you may be better off.
  • CloudDriver-great post. Gonna print it to keep it handy during the project.
  • Thanks ya'll. That is what I was hoping to hear. I'm takin the dive!
  • I replaced the short bedroom one by myself and the longer front room slide topper awning with a second pair of hands a couple of times during the installation. I used an aftermarket supplier with upgraded quality. Their instructions on sizing, ordering, installation and on line video were adequate. The patio awning is another project altogether and when needed I will pay a professional to do it. Many say it is also a DIY project.
  • Mike, I have an awning tearing and I used the advice of the guys call RVgeeks. I found an after market top that is wonderful and it is so much better than OEM. replacement is fairly easy as long as you follow the didoes and have two people doing it. fileing the corner of the tube and putting tape on it so it doesn't tear the new awning and now is the best time to use baby powder on the slide out seals. there is a video showing how to do that too. even if you never have done this before you can do it in an hours time. we just kept the lap top close by so we could follow the video step by step.
