solar panels or wind turbine battery charging?

Many years ago in a galaxy far , far away we lived on a 49 foot ketch in the trade winds . We ran our refrigerator VIA a wind generator mounted on the mizzen and had no problems for over ten years . Twelve volt living has been common on boats for 40 or 50 years.
