It would probably work great. There should be a 14" area in the center of the roof, and as long as there is not air ductwork there, it might be a ideal place to install the solar tube. Of course you will not need the tube part, but just the outer dome and inner section.
If you have air ducts in the center, then you would need to locate the tube someplace nearby.
Yes it will add light to the room. Personally I did not like the extra light. You might also consider installing a solar panel, then you will be able to run extra lights inside with all the extra power that you will have.
