Out of ignorance I bought a used 185W solar panel to use with our teardrop trailer, what I did not know was that it was intended for a grid tie system and had an open circuit voltage some place around 70V. I purchased a Morningstar MPPT controller that would handle the voltage. What found is that It will put out usable current from sun up to sun down and in shady camp sites.
We spent eight days on the north shore of Lake Superior in a camp site with maybe one hour of unobstructed sun on the panel. We run LED lights a TV/DVD, XM radio and a Waeco refrigerator. I monitor state of charge with a Victron battery monitor and at the end of eight days we were at 64% SOC.
High voltage panels are not as subject to loss from being blocked or shaded.
