Spring is coming

Well with the day time highs in the double digits and the night time lows hovering around that freezing mark, it getting close to the time to de-winterize the 5th wheel and the Camper.  but until that point I can start on the maintenance and prep that comes with spring.

Unlike those of you in the southern US that camp all year around, yes I am just a little jealous.... this is the time of year, where on a warm afternoon, I will climb up on the roof and take a look at all my sealant joints and mark any that need attention.  I also have to replace a tv antenna on the 5th as the last trip last year the wind gusts were so bad it bent up one of the wings on the way home.  I'll usually do a walk around looking at all the other sealant joints on the sides of the rv after the roof.  once I have them all identified, I'll grab the right color of self leveling and normal Dicor and get them all fixed up.

after the sealant I turn my attention to the mechanical side, get my water heater anode back in, or replace it if it is more than 50% gone.  (I use my house water for camping up here and the whole city is on RO water so my anodes last a few years) check the furnace, fridge and open up the low point drains and taps so the excess anti-freeze can drain out.

then when the lows are above freezing (should be any week now) I will flush the fresh water system out to get rid of the anti-freeze.  even second year I do a tank disinfection.  I used to use bleach but the last 4 years I have used Captain Phab purge tank cleaner.  No rinsing for ever to get rid of the bleach smell and taste.

so after all the sealant has been maintained, appliances have been checked, water system has been prepped, I move to the frame jacks, slides, tires, and suspension.  slide seals are conditioned, slide system lubricated, jacks are extended, cleaned and relubricated.  then I lift the tires off the ground and put new grease in the bearings every second year.  I do use the ez lube system, I take the time and do it properly so I have never had an issue with it, but it is a pain to do by your self but beats ripping the whole betting apart.  if anyone has never done it you have to have the wheel spinning while you slowly pump in the new grease.  if you pump to hard or don't have the wheel spinning you either won't get new grease to the whole bearing to force the majority of the old grease out, or you can blow your grease seal and contaminate your breaks.

From there it is just cleaning and getting ready for us, but I am probably missing a bunch of stuff I didn't even think of,

So what is your spring routine

  • Your spring routine is my fall routine. I typically don't camp in the summer since campgrounds are too crowded for a single man with all the kids grown and doing their own things.

    I'm southern California so
I drain all the tanks after every trip. I'm typically out of fresh water anyway as I try to time my usage to my length of stay.

    But every fall I'll

Drain anything left in the fresh tank. Drain the water heater. Refill the system with water and bleach (~1/4 cup or 50ml per 10 gallons water)

Run water pump until the water heater is full and all the faucets and toilet have been run for about 15 seconds each.  Top up fresh tank and let system sit and soak overnight.

Sometimes I get on the roof to inspect. But since most joints are eternabonded I don't spend a lot of time at this.

Inspect the tires for damage and air them up.

Check battery water levels and run the propane through all the lines starting with the stove\oven and ending with the refrigerator.

In the morning I flush the fresh water system at least two times and I'm ready to go camping.

ya, I wish I could camp all year around.  I used to do it when I was in the military and on Vancouver Island as normal winter lows were around the freezing mark so I used to just blow out the water lines in between trips.  some of the best new years eve parties/weekends I have ever done have been 3 or 4 units pulled out on to the beach at Jordan river with a nice bonfire.  up here where I now live, I just have to concede that I can't camp about 3 months in the winter.
