Step carpet

So the wife wanted carpet for the steps. So looked them up and there about $15 per step. $45 for three pieces of carpet! So made my own for the 3 steps for the price of one. Actually made 6 step cover 3 for us and 3 for friends of ours. 24 sq ft of outdoor carpet at Lowes $18.92
Harbor Freight spring kit - grommet kit and free light $8.76 so that comes to $4.61 per step and a little of my spare time.

One thing though about those carpets ,the metal Steps will actually Rust and Dissolve much faster when they are carpeted!

The steps on ours are aluminum.
  • Thought about doing this mod but my thinking is they're semi permanent. They're on the RV regardless of what weather you're traveling in. If it's raining and you pull in to set up, then the steps are soaking wet.

We went a different route. Not as nice looking as the OP's but functional. We have a 4'+L x 2'W rug that we just clamp to the steps when we setup. If it's raining then we can put the awning out and the rug stays dry. It's also washable.

Nice work. I did the same thing a few years ago. The grommet kit is the key.

  • Excellent! That's exactly what I did after the ones I purchased failed after 6 months. The ones I made lasted over a year and a half, I made extra so I could just replace if one went bad. I finally had to replace 2 of the 4 last month.
  • Looks nice AND custom fit the length of the step. Store bought ones are never wide enough to cover the entire step.
