Mine was wired that way too. I just took the wire that got power from the reverse lights and moved it to the "key on" hot. Now every time the key is on the monitor comes on.
I could have added a toggle switch so it could operate as it did or as it does (after the rewire) but it doesn't ever bother me to have it on and I can see the trailer is "still there". Kind of nice to know ;)
that may be OK with a better camera but I know that the cheapies warned against this since it would quickly burn out the screen.
