I have been towing a lot over the years without a camera but decided to put one on my current trailer. Guys can say what they want but the camera is great for seeing what's behind you especially on two lane roads where people tend to get so close to the back of the trailer that you can't see them in the mirrors or them darn motorbikes that get up close and personal then blast around you. Camera is no more distracting then looking in the mirrors and becomes part of the usual scan routine, check left mirror, check right mirror then glance at monitor.
Backup camera's are designed to run on 12 volt power and they don't care if they get a constant feed or are hooked up to the reverse system so they only come on in reverse. Mine is hooked into the license plate marker light so the camera is powered when I turn on running lights.
After problems with a wireless backup camera in the new Ram pickup I think was due to signal interference with the blue tooth and other fancy things in the pickup I decided to go wired with the trailer camera. Picked up 2 cameras, RCA cable and a 2 channel monitor off Amazon for around $60. Ran the RCA cable under the trailer up the trailer light cable leaving about 3 inches hanging free. On the truck I ran the RCA cable under the truck and behind the license plate where about 3 inches of cable rides on the bumper step. When I go to hook up I plug in the trailer light cable then plug in the RCA cables for the camera. The other camera is hooked to the truck for a traditional backup camera that I use to hook up the ball with.
