Sun Blocking on Sides of Awning

We have an electric retractable awning. Our problem is the morning and evening sun (our trailer is backed in with rear facing the East). As most of you probably know, Oklahoma gets extremely hot and we have a lot of sun.

The awning will only block sun at midday when the sun is directly over us. As you can imagine, during summer when we have many days over 100 degrees, the sun is killing us in the morning and evenings.

Looking for ideas that don't look too cheap or cheesy to block the morning sun from the East and evening sun from the West. A tarp temporarily attached to the side of the awning looked crappy and also didn't block all the sun. I do use anchors on my awning because we have pretty good winds a lot here in Okiee land.

As far as putting up a separate shelter, that won't work either due to the limited space in the park we keep it at. Also, moving to spot that is facing a different direction wont work because all of them are east-west or west-east spots. No trees either...

Any suggestions or ideas for us? Appreciate you all.

  • Thanks everyone. I am looking at all the suggestions everyone has provided and will be ordering at least one, if not two of them today. Really appreciate all the ideas!
  • We use both the main sunblock and the end sunblock often when we snowbird in Florida.
Not sure how they would hook up to an electric awning however but I'm pretty sure it can be done.

  • Forgot to add, we hang them from the accessory slot on the awning. :)
  • I have the sun blockers that others have listed but to shade the ends of the awning like you want I use Carefree Sideblocker,it attaches to the arm and extends to the ground, effectively blocking the sun on both ends when needed.

this IS what most of us do.

Only I go to lowes and pick up sun shade material, and a grommet kit for 2 bucks, and a box of S - hooks for RV awnings. The type with the rubber slide on it.

You can choose whatever color sun shade matches your awning or RV. It comes in beige, brown, green etc. I just happen to like it better than the black. The colored ones look much nicer.

Use grommet kit to put holes and metal rings on the top and bottom.
Use s-hooks to hang from awning.
Attach bottom with small camping spikes with or without small bungies.

    Done! :C

Scout around, check the internet, and even check RV dealerships and you might find one that fits your awning at a price that's comfortable for you.

We use a Quick Shade (actually we have 2 of them) and tilt them at an angle to block the sun when in awkward positions. But if requirements are limiting, about the only option is something like the link above. They slide in the awning roller track and then you anchor them down. Some come that block everything, and some are mesh you can see through.
