Surge protector

I want to get a surge protector and I am considering one that is installed permenently. How difficult would that be for someone to do? I have no background as an electrician .
  • I've had 2 different in-line protectors now. No problem with theft. If you have an extension cord, you can always plug the extension cord at the post, run it under the camper and then plug in the protector. At the other end of the protector, plug in the camper. You can kind of hide the protector this way. I did this with my first protector. It made me feel good and no fear of theft. The second one ... I simply plug in at the electric post now.

Here's a photo. I've posted this before. See if you can tell where the protector is?

    Can't find it?

    Look a little closer:

  • Install is very basic. However you should have someone check your work if this is the first time you have done any home wiring.

I've looked at the instructions online and the Progressive hard-wire units look like a pretty basic install. I'm no electrician, but can handle basic electrical work, kind of like a handy man. I see one in my future. The portable units are fine too IMO, the only issue is theft.

What is your reason for wanting one permenently installed. I have had mine in line on the power cord since I bought my 5th wheel in 2006. It is no problem to have on the end of the power cord. And if you get another trailer it can go with you.

I guess it wouldn't matter why he wants a permanent one, maybe to avoid theft. I will be putting a permanent one in my 5er as this is the last rv I plan on buying. And if not, I can take it out before trading or selling.

I would most DEFINITELY hire a RV mobile Repair Guy. NOT a residential electrician. They know nothing about RV electric.

Call a local CG in your area and ask who they use for Mobile Repair. They will come right to where ever your RV is whether its at a CG or at your house. They can also get the parts for you if they don't already have one on board.

I paid a licensed residential electrician ONCE to work on my RV and shore station at my house even explained to him with diagrams about the RV not being 220 and he still wired it wrong. Cost me 3,000 in repairs.

Just saying RV Mobile Repair is IMHO the only way to go AND it will be less expensive for them to do it and do it right!
  • I installed a hard wired Progressive unit in my TT. If you don't have any experience stripping wire or basic electrical skills, I'd get help. The install is fairly easy but I had to nearly remove my distribution panel to get access to mount the EMS.
  • If, as you say, you have no background as an electrician, I would have a knowledgeable electrician install it. They are not hard to install but a mistake could be costly...as Dirty Harry once said, "A man's gotta know his limitations"......just sayin....Dennis
