Taming a Noisy Coleman Mach 8 Heat Pump

Hi All,

Just finished doing a series of mods to our 15K Mach 8 heat Pump. The goal was to reduce outside noise. This thing is very noisy outside! So here is what I did...

1) Completely loosened all 4 hold down bolts and re-tightened properly. The one under the compressor was way over-tightened. Loosing it had a very noticeable affect on the outside compressor noise.

2) Got some 6 inch butyl backed aluminum tape from Home Depot. This is very thick and dense. Coated the inside of the black shroud and the area where the blower motor and evaporator coil is. This resulted in a noticeable (but not significant) reduction in outside noise. Plus a very noticeable reduction inside noise.

3) Upgraded the to the new 'D" version of the compressor fan. This resulted in a noticeable reduction in interior and outside noise.

In total these mods have significantly quieted down the unit. Inside it is just great and outside the noise is now close to what the average rooftop AC puts out.

After each mod, DW and I listened to the unit to get a feel for how effective each individual upgrade was. Each individually seemed to do a bit with overall impact in total being a very noticeable and significant) improvement.

  • Would have been neat to get before and after decibel readings. FYI, there are apps for smartphones that work decently for that.

    Cool project. Pun intended.
  • I changed the foam seal that comes standard with a rubber D-seal and retorqued the unit. nice to know about the butyl tape. I have some leftover sound boom mat that I'll try on ours. If it helps quiet the inside of the RV then I'm all for it.
  • You are a good man to attempt to limit noise from your neighbors. Well Done.
