Third Air conditioner

I won't go into my whole idea behind this but my question is this, can you, without negatively impacting the performance, mount a roof air side-ways on the roof of a motorhome? The actual usage of such a design would be used mostly in stationary situations(maybe once in awhile on the road). I've never seen it but I don't see any reason it would do any harm other than the venting inside going the wrong way?

  • And I appreciate opinions, so Thank You everyone. I've tried to lay out my reasons for wanting to "think" about this..mainly because I have a perfectly good spare air conditioner getting in my way in the garage.

I just happen to disagree about the about the air flow issue, sorry. My Carrier air has vents all the way around the shroud and at 50-60 MPH, I'm sure it would still provide sufficient air flow but I agree that it would act as a barrier to the stream lined flow of air front to back. And on that note....I think I'll just go back to picking up a smaller foot print unit and place it exactly where I want it.

    Thanks again....
  • there is a reason it has slanted nose, that is NOT just to be pretty

also when used when moving air flow is over the top and around the side side nose to back and draw heats from the coil

putting it sideways turns it into an air dam
disrupted air flow, may not be efficient enough to do what you want, cool the rv while driving

you ask for opinions, most don't think its a good idea

if this was primarily for stationary use, i would say go for it

it just may not work out so well while moving
putting it broadside is going to produce more wind resistance and possible problems with vibration and the mounts / clamping bolts holding tight
  • The spare air I have sitting in my garage is a functioning unit just as the ones are functioning on the roof. All internal fans, compressors, electronics are working.

My other option is to get a smaller footprint unit(such as a Dometic non ducted) and possibly place it the correct way in my current Kool-a-matic vent space or actually make a separate hole thus locating it exactly where I want it. I've had this notion for a couple years now...my travels are generally in areas where its HOT here in Calif and while my two airs are normally sufficient, having just a bit more on those really hot days(110+), would be nice.

On those hot days, as you walk front to back in the MH, you can feel the warm air in the area I want to place this third unit.....it might be something as simple as putting an insulated cover over that darn Kool-a-matic vent as you might for a bath vent. I'm still kicking this about, not sure I want to tackle this project but I do have some other work to do on the roof, so while I'm up there , who knows????
  • Powering will not be an issue, it will be very close to where my Sub Panel is and the Sub already has a 20 amp spare breaker. I don't believe the air requires any air flow, it certainly does not get any forced air when your stationary? I could be wrong....

As far as powering on the road, a 10kw generator would handle all three units.

I could see powering the third unit as a bit of a problem.

I think you’d have a bigger problem running it in motion than just the housing. They are designed to get high speed air flow in just one direction, doing otherwise could cause serious performance issues.
  • The two other airs are what you might call "old school" ducted but not forward to back only side to side. The extra air I have is a non ducted model which will work well, its an old Carrier unit I replaced with an Atwood not long ago and I had the notion to use this old one in the center.

In a word picture it would go something like this:

Front air is an Atwood 15,000 BTU Heat Pump, ducted side to side.

Middle(to be installed) would be the non ducted Carrier 15,000 BTU heat pump.

Rear would be a Carrier 15,000 DTU ducted side to side.

IN my 96 era Vogue, the Ducted portion amounts to vents(large opening vents) on either side of the return air.

The side way mounting may come into play if I put this third unit where I have a Kool-a-matic Vent now. The issue is that my model of Vogue has a raised roof as well as a step up mid coach. There's plenty of space inside for the lower unit but the upper portion of the air would be right at or near the hump in the roof line.
  • If you have a ducted system then I think you will have a problem.

Other than the cover blowing off, I don’t see much of a problem.

Good point but I suppose I could figure out something for that.
