I would say, in this case, common sense definitely did not prevail. If my refer vent was right next to the gas filler, I certainly would turn it off. On our Motorhome, the refer vent is on the opposite send and opposite end. We usually fill up at an outside pump. I do not turn the refer off when filling up. I do turn the Generator off since it is on the same side as the gas filler, although it is at the opposite end of the motorhome.
Around here, people smoke while pumping gas. It never ceases to amaze me. I just stay clear. Fortunately at the gas station I fill up most, there is an emergency shutoff at every pump.
