I too have heard all the stories...has there ever been an event in the last 15 years with a trailer blowing up at a gas / diesel station while filling up ?
There was one in my area about 1 year ago, I know this as I saw the unit burning static electricity caused the fire.

Static fires are common, and quite deadly, as they often happen when the victim touches the pump handle, generates an arc. This is usually caused by going back into the car, and failing to discharge the static prior to continuing to refuel. Specifically, was the fire you reference attributed in any way to the RV's refrigerator?
What does static electricity have to do with the refrigerator being turned off?
That is like asking about a house fire started by faulty electrical outlets, and someone says his house burned down due to a grass fire.
When we gas up, if DW thinks of it, she turns off the refrigerator. Probably about 25% of the time. We don't get upset if we forget.
