Well, it might not work, or it might just be sufficient. No way to tell without trying it. I am willing to try it, but only IF it will not damage the water heater or create a safety hazard and if I can put the water heater back the way it was. So that is what I am trying to figure out -- this is one of those "look before you leap" situations.
