Upgrading Handle

Question

I'm wanting to upgrade from the small factory handle on my entry way to a large D-shaped folding handle.  How do you know where it's safe to install something that you need to be tied to the framework of a wall?  I would assume (but uncertain) that the structural support for the existing handle runs vertical floor to ceiling.  But what if I wanted to install something that I have no point of reference to a possible stud?  I have a Coleman Lantern, which has aluminum exterior, so I doubt a traditional stud finder would work.

Entry door area is going to be 'framed out'

Close inspection from inside you may be able to determine exact location of vertical supports

And sometimes you just have to go with thru the wall bolts with a backer board....especially with something like a entry grab bar

1- look at other campers like yours and see where their d handles are bolted to.
2- open door and look inside the frame where the deadbolt goes into and that will show you how far wide the alum or wood studs are.

I've never run in to a rig that didn't have framing for a handle mounted directly next to the door. Many times, you can leave the existing handle and mount the new one above and below the original.

Sometimes a morning frost will outline the support structure on the exterior siding. As it gets warmer you might start looking for this and if it happens it will answer your question.

I did exactly what you want to do. There should be framing around the door opening. Look on the inside, push and/or tap on the paneling. Look for staples in the paneling. All of this will help indicate where the framing is located.
